Discount Retail Chain Lidl Poland overtook its biggest rival discounter Biedronka, which lost first place and found itself in second place.
The 2025 retail chain popularity ranking was prepared by Listonic based on analyses of shopping list titles created by Polish users of the Listonic app in 2024. In total, almost half a million of them were analyzed. This is an increase of 20.27 percent compared to the previous year.
Of all the shopping lists, 15.81 % clearly indicated the preferred retail chain. This data was used to prepare a detailed ranking that reflects the shopping choices of Poles.
Lidl's great comeback
After a year's break, Lidl regained the title of leader in the 2025 retail chain popularity ranking, taking over the crown from Biedronka. According to the Listonic report, the share of this chain among shopping lists with the names of grocery chains and discount stores was 38.55 %, which means an increase of 3.02 p.p. compared to 2023.
Lidl has been dynamically developing its infrastructure, opening 40 new outlets in 2024. In total, there are already about 930 stores of this chain in Poland. As the authors of the ranking point out, Lidl's success is the result not only of the development of the number of outlets, but also of an effective promotional strategy. The return to the first place in the ranking confirms the intensification of competition between the main players in the food industry.
Ladybug falls gently
Although Biedronka has fallen to second place, its importance on the Polish retail market is undeniable. The share of this chain among shopping lists was 36.90 percent, which means a slight decrease of 0.32 p.p. compared to the previous year. For this reason, analyzing the results, it can be seen that Lidl has gained not only at the expense of Biedronka, but also other retail chains.
With over 3700 stores, Biedronka remains one of the most represented retail chains in the country. In 2024, the chain opened about 200 new outlets, which indicates its dynamic development and expansion.
Kaufland moves up to the podium
For the first time in the history of the report, Listonic Kaufland was in third place. The chain achieved a share of 5.29 %, despite a slight decrease in popularity by 0.05 p.p. compared to the previous year.
However, it was enough to get to such a high place in the ranking.
Kaufland, present in Poland for 24 years, has 250 outlets. Around 10 new stores were opened in 2024, demonstrating its consistent growth. According to the authors of the ranking, Kaufland's rise to the top of the ranking is proof of the effectiveness of the strategy, which is gaining more and more recognition among consumers.
Auchan falls in the ranking
Auchan, which had been in third place for years, had to give way to Kaufland this time. The chain's share among shopping lists was 5.07 percent, down 0.79 p.p. compared to 2023. Auchan, which has been present in Poland for 31 years, has over 200 outlets in various formats, including hypermarkets and supermarkets. The chain declares further development of new formats, such as Atac Hiper Discount by Auchan and plans to open 120 Easy Auchan stores by 2025.
Dino enters the TOP5 of retail chains
The fifth place in the ranking was taken by Dino, which maintained stable popularity at 3.49 per cent of shopping lists. The chain recorded an increase in share by 0.14 p.p. compared to 2023.
Dino, which has been on the market for 26 years, has nearly 2,600 outlets. The chain's strategy focuses on locations in small and medium-sized towns and on the outskirts of large agglomerations. In 2024, as many as 167 new stores were opened, which strengthens its position on the market.
