Poland: History of Netto Poland

Discount Retail Chain Netto Poland celebrates its 29th anniversary in Poland. The first store was opened in 1995 in Szczecin, and currently the chain has over 660 stores throughout the country.

Netto, as a brand originating from Denmark, started its operations on the Polish market only a few years after the economic transformation in Poland. The company is part of the Salling Group, which has been building its position in the retail industry in Europe for years. In 1995, Netto opened its first store in Poland, which was the beginning of ambitious expansion plans in the fast-growing market in Central and Eastern Europe.

In 2006, the company celebrated the opening of its hundredth store, and in 2013 there were 3 times as many outlets. A significant moment was also the year 2015, when the number of employees exceeded 5000 people.

Netto is a participant in one of the largest acquisitions on the Polish market

In 2021, Netto made one of the largest acquisitions on the Polish market, covering over 300 Tesco outlets. The conversion to the Netto format was completed in 2022, and the chain has thus grown to over 660 stores across Poland, strengthening its position among the largest players on the discount market.

Netto's new strategy and development directions in Poland

At the beginning of October, Netto's owner, the Salling Group, presented a new strategy for the future, which aims to further ambitious growth in the markets of Denmark, Germany and Poland. The Group will allocate PLN 7.5 billion to implement the strategy, and a large part of these funds will go to the Polish market, where the Netto network will be expanded to 1000 outlets by the end of 2028.

The Group also intends to invest in startups in the areas of retail, technology and sustainability. "Our priority is to be close to the customer, both by developing our offer and improving the shopping experience. Therefore, our goal is not only to further develop the network, but also to strengthen ties with local communities. The customer and care for sustainable development remain at the center of the strategy, and we constantly share this approach with our business partners," says Anna Paszt, Chief Marketing and Sustainability Officer at Netto Polska.

Customers will also be able to take advantage of promotions for barn eggs, where when buying one package, they will receive another one for free. The offer will also include industrial products, e.g. Velvet toilet paper in the 6+6 offer for free.

"We are proud of our achievements so far, while looking to the future with great optimism. On the occasion of our 29th anniversary, we would like to thank all our customers for their loyalty and support over the years, hoping for further joint successes and further decades of development on the Polish market," sums up Patrycja Kamińska, PR Manager at Netto Polska.
