The Jeronimo Martins Group, owner of discount retail chain Biedronka, showed its results for 2022. The Group's revenues amounted to EUR 25.4 billion (an increase of 21.5% y/y). In 2023. Biedronka will open approx. 130-150 new stores and modernize approx. 350 outlets. In turn, the Hebe drugstore chain plans to develop an e-store and open about 30 stationary outlets.
"In 2022, a year of extreme uncertainty, consumers have once again appreciated the value of our proposals, namely price investments. The war in Ukraine has contributed to the disruption of international supply chains caused by the m.in Covid-19 pandemic (...). During this time, we have made a commitment and done our best to curb food inflation. We have "absorbed" most of the costs and passed on only part of them to consumers (...). We entered 2023 with a strong 'sales momentum'," said Pedro Soares Dos Santos, CEO of Jeronimo Martins.

In 2022, sales of Biedronka in local currency increased by 24.1%, with LFL at 20.6%. Sales reached €17.6 billion, up 20.9% from 2021. The strong sales led to a solid EBITDA growth of 15.0% (+18.1% in local currency). The EBITDA margin was 8.7% in 4Q22 vs. 9.4% in 4Q21.
Biedronka expanded in 2022 by 145 stores (157 openings and 12 closures) 367 stores were modernized and a new distribution center was opened. At the end of the year, Biedronka had 3,395 stores. Biedronka's investment outlays in 2022 amounted to EUR 485 million.
