Nigeria: The new market leader is a discounter

Last weekend hard discounter Bokku Mart opened their 26th and 27th store in Lagos (Mushin area) and became the largest store chain in Nigeria (> 220 miljoen inhabitants!).

Bokku Mart surpassed market leader Shoprite, which operates 25 stores, and the runners-up, like Market Square (24 stores), Grocery Bazar (17 stores) and Justrite (17 stores).

However, Shoprite stays the undoubted market leader in sales. The original South-Africa- based Shoprite was acquired by a Nigerian investment group back in 2021. This investment group owns also the successful discounter Jara.

Next to the above-mentioned banners, there's also Addide with about 40 locations which operates as a traditional mom & pop store in the "street retail channel".
