Discount Retail Chain Aldi Netherlands is the cheapest supermarket in the Netherlands. The consumer television program Kassa took made a shopping list and tried to find the cheapest variant of a total of 37 everyday products such as oranges, tea, potatoes and detergent.
This year it added a number of new frequently bought products, such as spaghetti, rice and potatoes. The price reduction due to offers was not taken into account.
Kassa bought the groceries on the same day in and around the Dutch city of Haarlem. Subsequently, supermarkets were shown the prices we had noted. Where there were unfair comparisons or a relevant product that was not on the shelves, it applied correction.
Checkout Shopping Basket 2025, the results:
- Aldi 63.68 euros
- Dirk 64,05 euro
- Lidl 64.39 euros
- Jumbo 72.94 euros
- Plus 73.80 euros
- Albert Heijn 74.45 euros
There is a difference of more than 10 euros between the most expensive supermarket (Albert Heijn) and the cheapest (Aldi). Our basket costs 74.45 euros at Albert Heijn and 63.68 euros at Aldi. Albert Heijn is closely followed by Plus (73.80 euros) and Jumbo (72.94 euros). This is followed by Lidl (64.84 euros) and Dirk (64.05 euros).
At Lidl, there was a discussion afterwards about the price of some items. The spokesperson indicated that Kassa had wrongly calculated the higher price displayed on the shelf for some products. The lower price displayed on the shelf would be the new fixed price, it would not be an offer. Kassa could not check whether this was correct, but assumed the benefit of the doubt. Lidl has indicated that the price tags will be adjusted and the supermarket will now make it clear that it is a fixed new price.
Clear selection
There is a clear selection between the price fighters and the more service-oriented and wider range of supermarkets. Dirk, Aldi and Lidl are close to each other, and AH, Jumbo and Plus are also close to each other. But the price fighters are about 15% cheaper than the more expensive three.
The result of the test does not surprise Dutch retail expert Paul Moers: "Albert Heijn and Plus are simply the most expensive supermarkets. The AH just has better offers. If they had been included in the poll, Plus would have come out as the most expensive."
It also does not surprise Moers that Jumbo ends up in third place: "Jumbo has put 150 million euros into making its range cheaper."
According to the retail expert, the supermarket is currently in particularly difficult weather. "Aldi, Plus and Jumbo are having a terribly difficult time. It's trial or error. The A-brands are making big money, while the supermarkets are earning almost no more. We have to wait until the first chain falls over."
The Dutch supermarkets emphasize that the shopping basket is a non-representative sample. They also indicate that some products are not easily comparable, because the quality is not included.
