France: Aldi and Lidl cannot profit of the French inflation

Once again, Leclerc crushed the match with a 1.3% gain in market share. Only System U and the Musketeers are afloat: +0.2 pt each. The real surprise lies in the decline of Lidl and Aldi: -0.3 pts.

The two discounters did not profit from the inflation. According to Retail Watcher, Olivier Dauvers, there are three potential reasons for this:

1) inflation was visible very early on (because the vast majority of private label assortments were affected more strongly and more quickly than elsewhere);

2) the construction of the range (mostly private label) has deprived customers as they also can find good private label products at hypers and supers;

3) the weekly non-food offers have not the effect they used to have anymore.
